Holidays are for getting back into shape, physically and mentally, and Derbyshire cottages provide an ideal base for great holidays. Derbyshire offers practically everything that such holidays need – stunningly beautiful scenery, hundreds of miles of walking trails, an extensive network of traffic-free cycling routes and much more.

In this article, we look at the walking and cycling facilities offered by Derbyshire and the Peak District.

Walking in Derbyshire

The Peak District National Park has a large network of footpaths, lanes and trails. Created by the area’s inhabitants while travelling from their farms, churches, mines and markets, these are natural
walkways. You could also be walking amidst the stunningly beautiful natural scenery of Dovedale and Manifold Valley. Just come to these spots on weekdays as they are likely to be overcrowded during holidays.

Derbyshire has several walking festivals led by experienced and knowledgeable guides, who include park rangers, archaeologists, ecologists and even ghost hunters. These festivals are held at different periods during the year. Rock climbing, caving and guided cycle tours are included in the Peak District Walking Festival, a large and varied festival.  There are also walking festivals such as Historic Border Country Walking Festival (passing by the Sherwood Forest), Footsteps in the Forest and Autumn Footprints.

Cycling in Derbyshire

There are many cycle hire centres in the Peak District that offer well-maintained equipment for cycling and mountain biking. Different models, including those suitable for people with disabilities are available at these centres.

There is an extensive network of traffic-free riding routes for cyclists wishing to explore Derbyshire. Riding
routes include a 13.5 miles-long disused railway line on the Tissington Trail as Ashbourne, beautiful woodlands beside the historic Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs, and 30 miles of limestone scenery at the junction of the High Peak and Tissington Trail.

Other Derbyshire Activities

Your Derbyshire holiday is not confined to walking and cycling. There are numerous other activities that a Derbyshire Holiday Cottage can offer you. For example, fishing facilities are available at the numerous historic rivers and other water bodies in the Peak District. Horse riding, paragliding, golf, water sports and rock climbing are other popular Derbyshire activities.
