Holiday Cottages Peak District – This is the fifth piece on exploring the Peak District National Park from a base in the south of the Park, the Paddock House Farm Holiday cottages at Alstonefield village. In this piece we continue with various sports activities possible at the Park.
Sailing and Windsurfing
In the last piece we looked at canoeing and kayaking, noting that in these water sports, one controls the boat using one’s own power, by being seated in an appropriate manner and using a single or double blade paddle. In sailing, it is wind power that we use to steer the boat.
Large sails are attached to the boat and by changing the rigging, rudder etc. you manage to get the wind to steer it in the desired direction. Obviously, you need a lot of (admirable) skill to get the wind do your bidding.
Windsurfing also uses sails, but instead of a boat, you stand on a board, as in surfing.
Sailing and windsurfing opportunities are available at the reservoirs in the Park and typically you will find yourself among surroundings that offer stunning views. If you are new to the sport, you can get training from the many sailing clubs located at the reservoir locations. You would acquire a great skill that will help you forget everything else and manage the wind to speed across waters.
Fishing
With a large number of water bodies such as reservoirs, rivers, lakes and canals, you have abundant opportunities to fish for trout and other varieties of fish. The two most important things you need are a national fishing rod licence, which you can get from Post Offices, and a fishing permit, which you get from the owner or manager of the water body concerned. At many places, you can get a day ticket (as distinct from seasonal let).
And you can probably carry your catch to your “home” at Paddock House to cook and enjoy!
