Ashbourne is a small town in Derbyshire with a reported population of 10,000. It prides itself as the gateway to one of the most visited tourist spots in the Peak District National Park, the Dovedale. The Dovedale valley has many limestone features, including caves and a “Dovedale Castle” formation, and attracts a million visitors every year, most of them attracted by the great walking trails it offers.

The River Dove that runs through the valley is also known for its trout fishing in addition to the riverside paths it offers to walkers.

The town of Ashbourne has an annual event, a two-day Royal Shrovetide Football Match. One half of the town plays the other half with town being the football pitch. The goalposts are three miles apart. More a brawl rather than a sport, thousands of persons “play” on the roads, across the fields and on the local river bed for two eight-hour periods.

The Tissington Trail, a highly popular walking and cycling path, runs through the town. Starting at what was once the Ashbourne railway station, the trail runs along the former Ashbourne to Buxton railway line.

Ashbourne is also a Fairtrade Town.
