Ashbourne Self Catering Derbyshire Holiday Cottages

The small town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire of UK has a rather strange football match held every year on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. The whole town becomes a football field with goal posts that are three miles distant from each other. One half of the town “brawls” with the other half on roads and across fields and a local river bed with a hand-painted cork-filled “football.”

While the match is an annual event, there are other attractions that make Ashbourne a perennial attraction. It lies in the Peak District National Park, reportedly the second most visited part across the whole world. The park has many walking trails where you can walk along river banks, limestone formations, abandoned railway tracks and through forests.

Ashbourne itself has the Tissington trail that follows the closed Ashbourne to Buxton railway line. The trail that starts at Mappleton Lane on the northern outskirts of town and passes through the village of Tissington is great for cycling and walking.

The Peak District also has many heritage structures and museums for the history-inclined travelers. Ashbourne has several listed heritage buildings such as The Old Manor featuring a rare king post, Tudor door and 17th-century Flemish glass. It also has the “Wirksworth Heritage Centre (that) tells the ‘story of Wirksworth’ a unique town set in the heart of Derbyshire. From a prehistoric woolly rhino to the history of lead mining and quarrying, Wirksworth has a fascinating history….” Just north of Alstonefield village in Ashbourne, the Paddock House Farm Holiday Cottages consist of six country cottages on spacious grounds filled with greenery. The three, two and one bedroom cottages offer accommodation for groups of two to eight per cottage and up to 40 in all. All the cottages offer self-catering accommodation with fully equipped kitchens and even dining areas/rooms.

Outside on the grounds, there are picnic benches and barbecue facilities.

The cottages are open for booking throughout the year and pets are allowed in. Special deals are announced from time to time.
