Holiday Cottages Peak District

In this piece on exploring the attractions of the Holiday Cottages Peak District National Park from a base in the south of the Park, at the Paddock House Farm Holiday cottages off the Alstonefield village, we look at some unusual experiences that you can enjoy at the Park. In the pieces completed so far, we had looked at the walking, cycling, horse riding, canoeing, kayaking, paragliding, hang gliding, sailing, windsurfing and fishing experiences that the Park can provide. As would be evident, the extensive National Park covering over 500 square miles can provide an equally extensive range of activities and experiences to the visitor.

Caving

Caving opens to us the world underneath the solid ground we walk upon. Going into a cave is a strange adventure that can even be dangerous unless safety precautions are taken.  In the case of the caves in the Peak District, the danger has been eliminated by fitting lights and other safety measures.

You can see some wonderful underground formations when you go into these caves. Even with all the safety fittings, going into a cave can be an intimidating and hence exciting experience to many.

The Titan cave at Castleton towards the north of the Park that is over 450 feet is largest natural cavern in the UK. The show caverns at Castleton is also the only place where Blue John stone is found.

The activity centres at the Park will equip you for a safe caving experience with a wetsuit, oversuit, helmet, light and wellingtons. Just bring some warm clothes with you.

Wildlife

For nature enthusiasts, the Park provides a large variety to plants, wildlife and other things to observe and enjoy.

You might enjoy seeing the strange formations of wood fungi, the numerous varieties of plants and flowers, birds such as the woodpecker, grouse and skylark (and many more), and animals like the mountain hare.

History

While the historical castles, museums and other heritage structures can teach you a lot about life in an earlier time, you might find it more exhilarating to do some research of your own.  You can go out into the country and look for ancient structures and then note down what you find interesting about these. You might even find dates carved on some structures that make you wonder at the length of time the structure has remained intact.

The Park guidebook suggests looking out for “stone walls and barns, ancient packhorse bridges, village crosses, old wells, watering troughs and dates carved in stone over doorways.” Ancient churches and historic market halls are other places similarly suggested.

Paddock House Farm Holiday Cottages

The holiday cottages peak district are converted farm structures, equipped with modern conveniences such as a kitchen with electric hobs, microwave, cutlery and crockery and dishwasher. The living rooms and bedrooms are also furnished with modern conveniences.

The six cottages, that accommodate groups from a couple to ten persons, are on a 35-acre ground, with five of these acres being gardens. The spacious ground also has picnic areas with barbeque, areas for games and tree-lined drives for a quiet walk in the moonlight.

You will find it a great base for your explorations.
