Holiday Cottages Peak District – This is the fourth piece on how you can enjoy the attractions of the Peak District National Park from your base at the Paddock House Farm Holiday cottages at Alstonefield located toward s the south of the Park. In this piece we look at some exciting activities that you might not be able to participate in your urban area.

Paragliding and Hang gliding

These are air sports where you can really fly, without engines. All you need are “wings.” In paragliding, the wings are made of flexible fabric while hang gliders have frame structures for wings. Both are foot launched using the pilot’s legs. The lifting action of air keeps the appropriately designed gliders up and you can fly considerable distances from a slope or ridge.

The excitement comes not only from the sensation of flying high above the earth but also the ability to view sceneries from your airborne perspective.

At the Park, there are several centres that offer paragliding and hang gliding facilities and training. The flying sites are also located among some of the most beautiful scenery.

If you don’t fancy taking to the air, you can just watch the adventurous ones flying around if you go to a popular site like Mam Tor (Castleton).

Canoeing and Kayaking

Do you know the difference between canoeing and kayaking? Both use boats and both involve moving along the water under your own power, i.e. no motorised propellers to propel you along.

Typically, the difference lies in the way you are seated and the type of paddle used. In canoeing, you sit with bended legs or kneel and use a single-bladed paddle. In kayaking, you sit with your legs extended and use a double-bladed paddle.

Both canoeing and kayaking need some training so that you can be in control and steer the boat in the direction you want.

In the placid waters of a reservoir or lake or quiet flowing river, these activities can be relaxing experiences. On the other hand, in the rocky waters of a raging torrent, it becomes an exciting sport requiring a high level of skill to avoid danger.

The Peak District has many beautiful reservoirs, rivers and canals where you can engage in these activities amidst idyllic environs.

The Paddock House Base

The Paddock House Farm Holiday cottages are six farmhouse structures converted into holiday accommodation. These self-catering cottages have fully equipped kitchens with stoves and microwaves, cutlery and crockery, dishwashers; living rooms with sofa-beds, TV/video; and bedrooms with standard facilities.

The cottages accommodate different size groups, from two to ten persons and nearly 40 altogether. One of the cottages has large church-style windows offering a magnificent view of the Manifold Valley in the Park. Some have old style coal fireplaces while all have room heaters.

The cottages are located in a spacious 35-acre ground with picnic spots, barbeque, children’s play area, five acres of garden and tree-lined walkways.

The Paddock House Farm Holiday Cottages is indeed a great base to explore the National Park.
